Many of you are moving into our state from other parts of the country.  So, especially for those of you coming in from the North or West, I would like to offer some household tips which may help you adapt to your new Southern clime.

Keep your HVAC system working.  Summer is the time for vacations, sometimes long vacations.  It is tempting to turn the HVAC system off while you are away to save money and conserve energy, but DON’T do it.  Humidity can build up very quickly in a closed up house with the HVAC off.  People will come home from an extended vacation to find mold growing on many surfaces in their house.

Pollen:  Another event that surprises newcomers is the annual spring pollen release.  For two to three weeks, usually in April, the world will be enveloped in clouds of yellow pollen.  All outdoor surfaces will have a coat of yellow.  At its height, outdoor tables or decks cleaned in the morning will look like they’ve not been touched in days by the time you see them again in the afternoon.  There is nothing to do but wait it out, keep your windows closed, and make sure your air filters are in good shape.  Wait until the pollen has subsided before doing your big outdoor spring cleaning.

North Carolina is a great place to live, but like all areas it has its quirks.  I hope you will find these hints helpful for your assimilation to your new home
