Chapel Hill cleaning service company Town & Country share how to use and care for microfiber cloths used in house cleaning and janitorial cleaning.
Caring for Microfiber Cloths
Properly cared for, these special cloths can be laundered many more times than Dad’s tee-shirt or even a new diaper or other cotton cloth before loosing their cleaning power. There are a few special rules you should keep in mind:
- Microfiber cloths should be laundered separately from other fiber types. This is because other cloths shed particles which can ‘plug up’ the tiny spaces between the split, star-shaped microfiber cloths. Laundering them with cotton cloths or clothing especially will reduce their effectiveness and shorten their useful life. They should hold up well for 50 washings and more.
- Hot water is general okay for washing, but many detergents have additives and fillers which can interfere with their action. Most home owners won’t dirty enough at one time to machine wash them separately. You may prefer to hand wash them with a gentle detergent using hot water.
- They can then be hung to dry (direct sunlight can be beneficial by providing a sanitizing effect). Most labels warn against using high temperature settings when machine-drying them.
- Bleach and fabric softener are both harmful to microfiber cloths; they will either interfere with their structure and degrade the fibers or negate their important electrostatic action.
