Understanding your Microfiber cloths – No, they are NOT cleaning rags

As a Chapel Hill cleaning service for over 23 years, we have had experience with many types of cleaning cloths. Simply put, we have found that microfiber cloths are the best for general purpose cleaning.  Whether you have invested in a top of the line retail version or bought a ‘big box’ store’s lower line of microfiber cloths they can do amazing work if you give them a little extra TLC.

Uses — Dry

Microfiber cleaning cloths may be used either damp (never sopping wet) or dry. Microfibers can be used dry, just as they came out of the package and are especially fine for dusting. They attract dust with electrostatic action and do a great job of trapping that dust until the cloth is laundered. Because of their split fibers and many microscopic interstices they also can wipe surfaces cleaner and the friction of the tiny fibers causes them to ‘dig’ deeper and the fiber size and design help the dust stay trapped to the fabric until laundered

Uses — Damp

Dampening the cloth further enhances the cleaning action. The damp cloth attracts moisture and soil with a type of capillary action, around the strands of the fiber rather than within the strands. Unlike the fatter, rounded fibers of a cloth fabric, particles are pulled up along with the moisture and cling to the tiny fibers by adsorption, not absorption. Finally, their physical qualities cause friction with a surface, allowing the wedge-shaped fibers to agitate and loosen soil for further adsorption.
